Bo Kaap…

Friday evening we visited Bo Kaap, which is a small distinctive Muslim community located in the city centre off of Wale and Buitengracht. The Muslim community is a series of brightly colored nineteenth century Dutch and Georgian houses. The streets are lined with shops selling curry, spices, meat, prayer rugs, jewelry, and the like. Outside there are boys playing ball and girls giggling on balconies {under the watchful eye of someone’s mother in her lawn chair.}

Dorp Street, Bo Kaap CapeI prayed in one of the oldest mosques in Cape Town, built in 1795. It was a simple mosque, two stories with an open loft type balcony for the sisters to see the Imam and the first floor. The carpet was green with a repeated gold pattern of a masjid pointed in the direction of the Kaba. {A little like an individual prayer rug for each person.} We missed jummah, and there were only two other people in the Mosque by the time we got there. In the quiet of the second floor I made salat and then sat in silence. It was extremely peaceful. A fitting end to a day spent exploring the top of a mountain. I am so grateful for opportunities, guidance, and grace Allah (swt) has bestowed upon family and me.

As my grandfather would say…”Thank You God for This Day.”
